10th Osaka International Design Competition — Osaka Design Foundation
Type: open. Registration and submission deadline: 9 January 2001 (30 Dey 1379). Entry fee: free. Prizes: a total of US$ 71,000. Jurors: Atsuko Kamashida, Darid Kusma, Ikko Tanaka, Tokeshi Tsuruta, Rikuhei Yamauchi.
The tenth Osaka International Design Competition is being held just as the history of humankind enters its third millennium — the passage from the twentieth century into the twenty-first. On the threshold of the 21st century our world faces many issues, among the most important of which are population growth, energy supply, environmental degradation, and the rapid advances in information technology. The tenth Osaka competition asks you to answer this question: “What new design or idea — in what form and by what path — can be offered to help humanity in solving the problems the world faces today?”
The passage from the twentieth century into the new century should not be regarded merely as a simple transition. It is the time to look carefully at what we have inherited from our predecessors and to decide: which things need to be reconsidered, which should be dissolved, and which should be re-created again in a new, contemporary form. To solve the varied problems that our world is grappling with, everyone who lives on this planet must join hands and regard the problems of today's world as their own. We await proposals and designs intended to help living beings and designed in accordance with the five guiding principles of the competition.
Hanssem Interior Design Competition
Type: open. Registration and submission deadline: 9 July 2001. Conditions: unrestricted. Entry fee: free. Prizes: a total of US$ 47,000.
The aims of this competition are the development of design in the field of furniture and the equipment and interior goods of buildings, the selection of professional home-interior designers, and the presentation of innovative home-equipment designs suited to Asian culture and ways of life.
This competition is a fitting opportunity for those designers who possess ability and skill suited to the present day. Its aim is the building of a society in which man and nature coexist peacefully. Although the scope of the competition is Asia, it is also concerned with finding global perspectives on a new form of life in the information age on this earth.

“A time will come when you, France, Russia, Italy, Germany, and all the nations of this part of the world, will come together as one without losing your independent existence.” — Victor Hugo, 1850.
We believe that the classical system of states is not effective in the new millennium. This thought has raised a new discussion under the heading of a “United Europe”. Economic motives are the driving force of a political approach toward solidarity and integration. The introduction of the euro was an important step toward economic union. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark, with their shared embassy in Berlin, have set an example for the other European countries to follow.
This competition seeks the design of a shared embassy for the European countries. The choice of site is not at first part of the competition. There is no restriction in the design programme of the embassy. Your vision and insight into the future development of Europe should form the basis of the design.
Seaside Town Design Competition
Registration and submission deadline: 3 January 2001 (14 Dey 1379). Conditions: unrestricted. Entry fee: free. Prizes: exhibition.
The town of Seaside is organising a competition for the design of a landmark attraction, both to draw visitors and to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the town's founding. Participation in this competition is open to all. To allow creativity to flourish, there are no constraining rules. Participants are free in the presentation of their programmes and designs of whatever kind, as well as in the presentation of solutions for today or the future. The proposed axes and places may be imagined or real, but in any case must be suited to the characteristics of Seaside. Beside the sea, the possibilities of design are nearly unlimited, but the fact is that building on the beach is no easy task.
This one-stage competition is an opportunity for the appearance of the talent and creative power of architects. Proposals that are appropriate in scale, and three-dimensional models that can easily be exhibited, are given priority.
