The residence, architectural office and collection of architectural ornament that Sir John Soane built for himself over 40 years at Lincoln's Inn Fields, by remodelling three adjoining houses, is a masterpiece of the compression and fusion of space and time. Working within the extremely limited boundaries of the walls of the existing building, and employing precise methods of natural lighting, Soane built an inhabitable ruin characterised by unexpected spatial depth, compositional complexity and a connection with the passage of time.
