Apartment Building

Zafaraniyeh Building in Tehran designed by Mohammadreza Nikbakht is attractive due to the warm color of its brick and wood combined with other materials. The plan of the building, which places different spaces — square, rectangular, semicircular, and hexagonal — together, evokes archaeological excavation plans, reinforcing the eclectic content of the work. Playfulness in proportions and the use of scattered decorative elements has given the building a cheerful quality.

Critic Kamran Afshar Naderi noted that the concentration of diverse and disparate formal elements — clearly beyond the building's capacity — has made the entrance area somewhat indigestible. The playfulness in proportions and decorative elements, while somewhat excessive, contributes to the building's distinctive character. Selected as a Jury Selection at the 2nd Grand Memar Award (2002) in the Apartment Buildings category.
