Arne Jacobsen, Royal SAS Hotel, Copenhagen

This twenty two storey hotel by Jacobsen is of the type composed of a base with a small height that usually fills the whole site, and a tower at some point above the base. Another example of this is Lever House in New York by SOM. Although the scheme seems simple, it is the details and the particular concerns that make the difference. For example, the upper, tower part, is separated from the base by a recess, and the glazed surfaces are intended to reflect the sky and merge with it. However, the most significant distinction of this project is its numerous interior designs, details, objects, and furniture, down to ashtrays and forks and knives, any- thing that was needed in fact - all done with Jacobsen’s particular craftsmanship of elegance, simplicity, and beauty.
