Overall Form

A number of specified sections will follow. This has proven difficult however, since in every image many aspects such as the materials, doors and windows, screens and the like can be found. In some images one aspect seemed more pronounced. This was the basis of the sections. The list however, is by no means complete or final. This introductory part is about overall form.

STONE - ONE COLOUR - 3 FINISHES

BALCONIES - FULL LENGHT - 2 DEPTHS

COMBINATION OF BALCONY + STAIR + CANTILEVER

A house on the northern side of a street : garden and balconies on the street side. Same colour of stone is used as smooth and textured. Four cubic forms have pro- jected out: The smallest is to the left of the balcony parapet. A similar one occurs at the right hand end of the roof parapet. The corners of the projections on the right almost meet. Fine lines and recesses are evident.

A very elegant result by means of the finesse of the elements and a positive and negative tonality scheme: Note the fabric like texture of the three stone surfaces, the inwardly angled stair window frame, the lighter coloured left hand surface, and the door surround. The way the two surfaces have been separated by a diagonal line to the left of the entrance, and the exemplary design of the ironwork should not go unnoticed. The door is not original. The original door would definitively have used glass – to allow light in at least.

A highly articulated crystalline form: This characteristic has been augmented by the flushness of the windows with the stone. The window divisions are painterly. The hori- zontally set stone rectangle, which projects out only slightly, has made the windows L shaped by occupying a corner. The opening sections of the windows do not align vertically – a formal improvement. The sharp corner edge is made even sharper by the turning of the glass. The slightly projected stone rectangle shifts into the space of the balcony - !!! - The vertical stone strips come down slightly against the lower edge of the cantilevered mass.

The blue soffit colour is original. Although a northern side of the street plot, untypi- cally the building is in the front rather than the garden.

گوشة جنوب غربي- ميدان جوانانJavanan Roundabout - SW corner

ThIs and the previous three pages show two situations on roundabouts. Both cases use the curve of the street line, solids and voids, cantilevers, screens, balconies and terraces for dynamic effects.

STONE - TRAVERTINE + GREY STONE

The vertical screen on the lower section of the stair window is a later addition.

A church in the cul-de-sac west of the Cafe Naderi building in Jomhouri Street, once the hub of a cosmopolitan area. The diverse cultures that energized the place had actually also built it, and then moved on to build similarly further north, in Sanaii (opposite page) for instance. They were in tune with the times and the fashions, and designed the new way of living, elegantly.

CERAMIC MOSAICS STONE COLOUR - WHITE + GREEN + BLACK BALCONIES PANELS

In this period, the way external walls hit the street would be carefully thought through. Stone was used in large pieces or in a combination of sizes separated by fine grooves. Some walls would be raised against the ground by slits.
