This project involved the renovation of an existing residential building in Zanjan. The challenge was to transform a dated structure into a modern dwelling while respecting the constraints of the original building and the geographical and climatic conditions of the region. The renovation addressed both the exterior facade and the interior spaces, with particular attention to thermal insulation and energy efficiency.
The design employed double-layered walls with thermal break technology to address Zanjan's harsh winters. The exterior was clad in local stone, creating a contemporary interpretation of traditional Zanjan architecture. Vertical stone pilasters articulate the facade, providing rhythm and scale while referencing the columnar traditions of Persian residential architecture.
The aluminum windows were designed with thermal break profiles, and the facade features a composition of solid stone walls punctuated by carefully placed openings. The wooden garage door provides a warm contrast to the light-colored stone cladding. Inside, the renovation created a generous two-story living space with a spiral staircase as a central architectural element.
The interior design incorporates exposed concrete walls alongside refined finishes, creating a dialogue between raw industrial aesthetics and domestic comfort. The ground floor features an open-plan living area that connects to a courtyard through large sliding glass doors, while the upper level accommodates private bedrooms and a study. The courtyard features a wooden pergola and stone-clad stairs that connect the different levels of the outdoor space.
The floor plans reveal a compact yet efficiently organized layout, with the ground floor devoted to social spaces and services, and the upper floor to private quarters. Cross-sections demonstrate the innovative use of natural light through skylights and strategically placed windows, while the stair detail showcases the project's attention to craftsmanship in metalwork and joinery.
