Azadi Metro Station (H2), Tehran Metro Line 2

The Azadi Metro Station (H2) on Tehran Metro Line 2, designed by Farzad Rouzay of Hamgrooh Consulting Engineers, won joint second place at the 3rd Memar Award (2003). Located at the Azadi Crossing on Shademan Street, the station serves as a major transit hub for Tehran's urban and suburban railway network.

The jury recognized this project as a rare and significant example of quality architecture applied to public infrastructure in Iran. At a time when most metro stations followed purely utilitarian standards, Rouzay's design introduced genuine architectural ambition into the underground environment. The station's use of natural stone cladding, exposed structural elements, and carefully considered lighting creates spaces that elevate the daily experience of commuters. The warm travertine wall panels and the articulated steel roof trusses visible at platform level give the station a distinctive identity.

Covering 8,000 square meters across ticket hall, platform, and service levels, the design began in 1998 and demonstrates how large-scale public works can accommodate architectural expression without compromising functional efficiency. The structural designer Farhang Ghajar contributed to the honest expression of the station's engineering within its architectural vocabulary.
