This is a development project for a building with an aluminium structure that can be mass-produced. The project began at the commission of SUS, a company that manufactures precision instruments with aluminium frames. Fabricating 1200-square-millimetre panels at the factory, with no process needing to be carried out on the construction site, suggested a system that allows the panels to be joined with bolted connections, all of which has led to a reduction in construction time and final cost.
Our aim in developing an aluminium architecture was to find a way to achieve a new structural expression that is not possible with steel. Aluminium is flexible to the extent that it can be moulded into any shape, very precisely and easily. The structural wall is made of aluminium panels moulded in the shape of a cross, which have pin joints with a fitting system at their edges. The first aluminium house was opened in Tosu, Kyushu, as a model house.
