Hafez Residential Apartment Architect: Raouf Qasemi Location: Ardabil, Iran Date: 2016 Area: 154 sqm Status: Completed Client: Farid Nejad Soleiman Photo: Fardin Takramian The lack of land and energy resources, sharp rise in the costs, technology development and above of all, changing in lifestyle and family structure, limit the using of single-purpose spaces in contemporary housing design. Flexibility is the key of this challenge. Due to the building technology of traditional Iranian architecture, especially the use of thick and load bearing walls, rearranging the position of walls to make changes was impossible. But, a wise solution (multiple entrances for each space, and selective connect-ability and disconnect-ability) enable the houses to create a wide variety of spatial configuration. Now, the main concept in the dwelling units design is to combine the features of both modern houses and traditional Iranian houses in spatial configuration. The proposed solution in this project, is to configure the spaces flexibly; So that, they can have close relationships or no relationships anytime desired: |- The dining room can be a part of the kitchen or be in connection with the hall and the sitting room. |- The configuration and positioning the master bedroom, the kitchen and the dining room close to each other, can define a small individual house inside a bigger one. |- The bedrooms can be separated from the other spaces, by movable partitions and be used as guest rooms. |- The living room can be related to other spaces or be a big separated room for the users. |- The WC box play the role of a functional joint for the other spaces and the movable partitions can be moved along it’s faces.
