The “Marine City” designs, drawn up between 1958 and 1963, are the first and most influential proposals for building “megastructures” at sea after the dissolution of CIAM (the International Congresses of Modern Architecture). They comprise two main types: the “floating structure” as a concentrated type at the scale of a city, and the “oceanic linear city” as a linear type at the scale of a nation.
The design presented in 1958 was a circular floating industrial city 4 kilometres in diameter. Around the city were twelve spherical industrial units with a total area of about 1,000,000 square metres. These units were part of the “kombinat”, or “mother trunk”, of an evolving industrial city.
