The central square of Rasht had become congested and polluted by automobiles; this project returns the square and nearby streets to a pedestrian-only area. The entire square and two streets emanating from it were stone-paved in traditional designs and patterns; newly landscaped areas are planted with trees and shrubs; moveable, metal-and-wood street furniture was designed and installed; and a pool with a fountain was designed in front of a historic monument at the entrance to the square. The project has proved highly successful and the square is now actively frequented by local residents, children, and visitors; merchants have seen an increase in business and are beginning to improve the façades and premises of their shops.Source: Aga Khan Trust for Culture
