Rowzan Residential Building in Tehran, won First Place in the Apartment Buildings category at the 16th Memar Award (2016). The client requested a seven-story residential building with two similar units and one triplex unit. The spatial organization, considering the steep natural slope of the site — 16 meters from north to south — and the possibility of light and views from the south, was arranged in three terraced sections stepping down the slope.
The project concept is a unified white concrete shell that wraps the building and is carved with elliptical openings influenced by the internal circulation and functions. On the northern side, due to the presence of Shahid Chamran Camp and the resulting noise and overlooking, a double-skin was employed. By setting the building volume back from the northern edge, a private lightwell and courtyard were created where the shell's apertures organize light inward and create a soothing intermediate space at the entrance, while severely limiting external views into the interior and maximizing overhead natural lighting through floor-to-ceiling openings.
On the south facade, the shell is interrupted to allow wide openings and green terraces for the excellent views and minimal overlooking. The idea of simplicity in the external treatment extends throughout the interior spaces of both common areas and residential units.
