A private royal chapel that breaks every convention of mosque design — no minaret, no courtyard, no congregational space. Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque was built by Shah Abbas I for his harem's exclusive use, connected to the Ali Qapu palace by an underground passage. Its single-shell dome is a masterwork of optical illusion: cream-colored tiles at the apex transition to deeper blues and golds toward the base, creating the impression that the dome is taller than it actually is. The dome's color shifts throughout the day — pale pink at dawn, warm gold at noon, deep ochre at sunset. Inside, a cascade of arabesques descends from a central sunburst medallion in what many consider the pinnacle of Safavid ceramic art.
