19th Memar Award: Jury Report

Share

The competition for this edition, as in previous years, was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, held in an elimination format on the 9th and 10th of Shahrivar, out of 243 projects that had submitted their documentation in four categories -- Individual Dwellings, Apartment Buildings, Renovation, and Public Buildings -- 84 projects advanced to the semi-final stage. The second stage of judging took place on the 6th, 7th, and 8th of Mehr, with 33 projects reaching the final round, from which 17 were selected as winners and honoured projects.

The jurors for this edition of the Memar Award were Faramarz Sharifi, Alireza Sherafati, Kourosh Dabbagh, Mohammad Mohammadzadeh, and Elham Geramizadeh.

Judging criteria: creativity and innovation in design and in the use of materials and building technology; creative engagement with the project's specific challenges, including economic constraints, particular site conditions in terms of dimensions and scale, legal regulations and procedures, and technical difficulties; precision and innovation in detailing; attention to the surrounding environment and climatic conditions, environmental values, and social commitments. Naturally, the final judgement of each project is made not by assigning scores for each of the above criteria and averaging them, but by judging the project's totality.

Programme and judging method: projects were divided into four groups -- Apartment Buildings, Individual Dwellings, Public Buildings, and Renovation. In the first round, all works within the same group were displayed together for the jurors to view; after examining all of them, works unanimously rejected by all jurors were set aside. Even if a single juror favoured retaining a work, it was not eliminated. The remaining entries advanced to the semi-final. In the second round, each juror selected their preferred entries without ranking, and entries chosen by no juror were eliminated. The selected entries were deemed finalists. In the third round, each juror independently chose their first, second, and third places (3 points for first, 2 for second, 1 for third). The aggregate of all jurors' scores determined the final first through third places. Jurors could also designate certain finalists as deserving of special commendation.

Individual Dwellings: Bahonar Street House (11 points) first place, Beh Dad House (7 points) second place, Ayenevarzan House Damavand (6 points) third place. Afra House (4 points) honoured. Aras House (2 points).
