3rd Place: Sacred Foothold, Qeshm

Sacred Foothold of Hazrat Khizr is located in Chahkooh Gorge on Qeshm Island, at the heart of the Qeshm Global Geopark. This project was executed with a modest budget of 30 million tomans over a period of three months.

The project site is a natural gorge with rock walls shaped over thousands of years by water and wind. This gorge is one of the major tourist destinations on Qeshm Island and also the location of a revered pilgrimage site. The architect's challenge was minimal intervention within this extraordinary natural setting.

Using local materials and indigenous construction techniques, the architect has designed a lightweight, minimal structure. Local stones and mud mortar are the primary building materials, harmonizing with the natural environment.

The access path to the sacred foothold is formed by natural stone steps that wind through the rocks. This path gradually leads the visitor from the open space of the gorge into the enclosed and sacred space of the shrine. The project's minimal design preserves the grandeur of nature at this site, reducing human intervention to the absolute minimum.
