Jahad Metro Station Plaza is a public urban intervention in Tehran that received 3rd Place in the Public Buildings category at the 23rd Memar Award with 4 points. Designed by KA Architecture Studio with principal architect Mohammad Khavarian, the 800 m² structure was commissioned by the Tehran Municipality as part of the "Tehran: A Pedestrian-Oriented City" plan.
Jahad Metro Station Plaza was one of the first pilot projects of the pedestrian-oriented plan — selected to be expanded across Tehran and other cities if successful. The architects prioritized metro station entrances as critical urban sites for regeneration, selecting a triangular plot at the intersection of an important, busy street in old Tehran — one of the city's early nuclei carrying the history of different eras.
The strategy began with defining a free canopy without barriers to entry, creating sheltered space beneath it at all hours. The arch form was chosen for its ability to provide tall, proportionate height at low cost, its self-supporting structure with minimal footprint, its reference to Iran's architectural past, and its distinctive icon-like quality. The project redefines metro entrances as covered urban event spaces and democratic open spaces, transforming a simple entrance into a new arena for civic life.
