The Minoan palace at Knossos, on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea, now in ruins, was originally the centre of the daily life of a city of one hundred thousand inhabitants built around the palace. The palace is an example of the labyrinthine organisation of spaces, a complex interweaving of independent rooms arranged in the order of their use, an engagement of the natural topography and a continuous connection with the landscape.
