Saadat Abad Office-Commercial Building in Tehran, won joint Third Place in the Urban Design category at the 15th Memar Award (2015). With dual northern and southern frontages along Saadat Abad Boulevard, the building contains one commercial unit, five office units, one parking level, and one storage level. The plot area is 250 square meters with a total built area of 1,300 square meters.
On the southern facade, the building recesses into itself, opening appropriate views toward the facing park, which enhances the spatial quality of the office units. Covering the southern facade with vertical louvers prevents direct sunlight penetration while unifying the project and concealing unnecessary building details from its main viewing angle along Saadat Abad Boulevard.
The northern facade is covered with a similar modulation that gives the entire surface a calm texture, creating cohesion and similarly hiding unnecessary details from the city's view. The facade texture becomes movable at sections facing openings, rotating at three angles — zero, 45, and 90 degrees. By opening and closing these movable louvers, one can control the amount of natural lighting in the space, and the spatial privacy relative to the facing building becomes adjustable as well.
