Villa in Mazandaran

Two villas in Mazandaran by Reza Ali-Abadi are notable for their interpretation of native materials and the combination of materials and volume. The plan employs the ancient motif of the nine-part square, but the exterior volume — contrary to the static model of the plan — enjoys an attractive variety and composition of solid and void. The architectural details have been designed with care and taste.

Critic Kamran Afshar Naderi praised the villas for their successful reinterpretation of vernacular building traditions through contemporary design sensibility. The tension between the traditional nine-part plan and the dynamic exterior volumes was seen as a particular achievement. Selected as a Jury Selection at the 2nd Grand Memar Award (2002) in the Single-Family Houses category.
