We are facing a serious crisis in the architecture of the house in Iran, and the architecture of our homes does not correspond to the exigencies of the contemporary world—or, in other words, to the spirit of the age—even though our daily lives are in many respects shaped by the transformations of the contemporary world. The architecture of houses in Iran, and especially in our major cities, is a complex, multi-variable problem with variables of different natures and dimensions: the tendency toward fashions and fabricated styles, ornamentation and luxury from a cultural standpoint, the poor quality of these same buildings from a technical and constructional perspective, and high energy consumption from an economic standpoint are among the multiple dimensions of this problem. Thus it can be said that the issue is, on one hand, the absence of minimum building standards and, on the other, a matter of architecture and aesthetics. However, since technical problems have definite solutions, resolving the technical shortcomings of houses is not as complicated as overcoming the aesthetic crisis. The client of architecture accepts the specialized nature of structural and building services engineering, but harbors doubt about the specialized nature of architecture and aesthetics, considering personal taste to be a factor—and it is precisely this that makes overcoming the crisis so difficult. It goes without saying that examining the multiple dimensions of this subject in a single issue of a magazine is not feasible. In this issue, our aim is to raise the subject of contemporary houses from the perspective of creativity and conformity with new needs and contemporary exigencies, and to emphasize the importance of experimental projects and the revision of traditional definitions of the house. By referencing some of the most important experimental housing projects in the world from the past to the present, we address the research conditions that have, throughout history, led to the redefinition of the concept of the house at different junctures. At the same time, from this very perspective, the question of contemporary urban houses in Iran and the world will be examined. Among all types of architectural functions, the house is both the most influential and the most susceptible to influence. Throughout history, whenever the mode of human livelihood has changed, the architecture of the house has undergone transformation as well. Generally, at sensitive and historic junctures, factors such as technological advancement, economic crises, political upheavals, workers' and socialist revolutions, cultural crises, and likewise environmental issues and the energy crisis—or war—have led to a revision of the definition of housing. Over the past 150 years, the Industrial Revolution and the First and Second World Wars, as major historical junctures, have profoundly affected the form of houses and the nature of human habitation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Each of these junctures brought irreversible changes, just as after the Industrial Revolution in the early nineteenth century, the shape of cities changed with the migration of villagers to cities and the construction of thousands of workers' houses, and a century later, the World Wars influenced not only the mode of dwelling but also the formulas of urban planning and the composition of cities. At each of the aforementioned historical junctures, the need to resolve the question of habitation anew led to the formation of experimental projects and the design and construction of new prototypes. The origin of these projects was sometimes born of urgency—as in post-war housing complexes such as Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation in Marseille, which aimed to provide housing for war survivors—and sometimes, like the Weissenhof Estate and the Case Study Houses of Los Angeles, it was about engaging with the lifestyle and imaginings of modern man and creating ideal spaces suited to those needs. Despite the difference between these two categories of experiences in terms of their reasons for emergence
and their target social strata, their common thread is the same model-making and the valorization of new ideas and definitions in the field of habitation. The crucial point of such experiments is the offering of non-classical answers to classical questions—discussions such as aesthetics, function, ornamentation, furnishing, and so on, which have been and continue to be raised in various forms throughout history in relation to the subject of habitation. The avant-garde outlook of architects toward longstanding subjects in each era, or their keen perception in identifying fundamental issues that will arise in the future, leads to the creation of new models in accordance with the spirit of the times. It does not matter whether these models were, by the standards of their own era, ugly or beautiful, comfortable and functional or impractical, because each of these experiments holds a value in the history of architecture that relates to the effort to change public taste and to present models that aid in the modernization and mental renewal of society, making people sensitive and aware of what is better for them. In what follows, we will review these experiments, and we address some of them in other articles in this issue.
Experimental Models After the World Wars. With the destruction of houses in the bombardments of the World Wars and the displacement of large populations in European cities, numerous research and experimental projects in collective housing took shape. These projects, as experimental housing complexes, set about articulating creative policies in the field of housing. In Berlin, for example, six complexes with these characteristics were built between 1910 and 1935, their aim being to respond to population growth and the economic conditions following the end of World War I. Bruno Taut, Martin Wagner, and Walter Gropius were among the standard-bearers of these projects in Germany. These complexes, in addition to changing public taste in terms of architectural aesthetics and introducing types of urban apartments, offered new solutions for urban design
and landscaping, and played an important role in improving the living conditions of the middle and lower-income classes of society. Just two years after the end of World War II, in 1947 in France, construction began on the Marseille housing project—one of the most important examples of social housing. Le Corbusier implemented his famous five principles and his urbanism ideas, which he had been developing for 25 years, in this complex. He rejected the construction of garden cities on the outskirts of major cities and, for the first time, placed green space within a vertical structure alongside communal living, shopping, sports, recreation, and public services. In this respect, the Unité d'Habitation in Marseille became a model for subsequent housing complexes. The Marseille complex was experimental from four perspectives: 1- Redefining the concept of habitable space, 2- Being a pioneer, 3- Studies into the social underpinnings, 4- The integration of block construction techniques and urban design. Projects of this kind, which are regarded as the first experiment of their type, naturally come with technical and functional problems, and the Marseille complex was no exception—construction was halted repeatedly due to the criticisms leveled against it. But the value of this project and others like it, which undoubtedly represent a step forward, lies in the influence they have had on advancing architectural thought, just as the Unité d'Habitation in Marseille, as the first example of social housing, remains a model for housing complexes to this day. Le Corbusier, at the inauguration of the Marseille complex in 1952, referred to it as the first example of a new type of human habitat in the world, in accordance with the human scale, and said: Despite having a government client, this project was designed and built free from any governmental constraints; it not only stands outside conventional regulations but contradicts and rejects the disastrous former regulations. This complex
was built for humanity based on the human scale and on the solid techniques of modern architecture, and its purpose was to provide the family with access to the best modern resources.
The Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart and the Case Study Houses in America. The field of architecture, like other branches of science, needs research laboratories. Just as with the changing patterns of modern life, one of the most important research projects of modernism in the field of housing took shape. The Weissenhof Estate project, which endeavored to define the modern lifestyle, was realized in 1927 in Stuttgart, Germany, in the interval between the First and Second World Wars. In this project, 17 prominent European architects—including Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Gropius, Bruno Taut, and several German architects who were mostly pioneers of modern architecture and young architects under 45—designed residential prototypes. The Weissenhof complex, which was originally built for the Werkbund Exhibition, was able, as a residential prototype, to establish the direction of the modern house and become the model for houses in the International Style. The Werkbund was an association of German architects, artists, and industrial designers that played an important role in the development of modern architecture and later in the founding of the Bauhaus school. Approximately two decades after Weissenhof in Europe, in America, Arts & Architecture magazine initiated a similar project called the Case Study Houses, most of whose built examples are located in Los Angeles. The program's objective was the construction of relatively low-cost houses with emphasis on employing up-to-date techniques and materials of the 1950s and 1960s, with the goal that these houses be replicable and serve as models for American family housing after World War II. The project began with discussions that took place in the magazine's office among

young and thoughtful architects regarding post-war housing. Architects such as Richard Neutra, Ralph Rapson, John Rex, and five others who designed and executed the first eight prototypes. Unlike Le Corbusier's Marseille project, this project did not recommend collective housing for the post-war years and was not seeking minimums for housing. Its single-family houses, though American in style, appear to have been more inspired by the Weissenhof project. The project's call stated: "...Our assumption is that the form of life after the war is of primary importance for most Americans, and that houses, while being buildable, should use technology born of the war and materials that best reflect human life in the modern world and are ultimately understood in the spirit of the age." Thus 36 houses were designed, and approximately two-thirds of the plans were realized, the major portion of which are currently listed on the American National Register. House No. 8, the work of Charles and Ray Eames, and Houses No. 21 and 22, the work of Pierre Koenig, are among the notable examples of this collection. Julius Shulman's historic photographs of these houses are highly iconic. The furniture, the residents' clothing, and the automobiles reflect the lifestyle of the people and the prevailing fashions of the 1950s and 1960s. Each of the Case Study Houses was documented during design and execution, and after completion, and published in Arts & Architecture magazine. After completion, the houses were open to the public for several weeks. Today, technological transformation and the emergence of the internet on one hand, and the limitations of the earth's energy resources on the other, have transformed the lifestyle and needs of contemporary people. The elderly population is also growing relative to children and young people, and one of
the issues ahead in the near future will be the solitary lives of the elderly in their homes. In general, it seems that we are at an important historical juncture that could once again transform the definition of the house and habitation after modernism. The architecture of the house is more susceptible than other architectural functions to the influences mentioned above. The social and economic conditions born of the World Wars primarily affected functions, lifestyles, and consequently the mode of habitation and the typology of houses, whereas the architecture of public spaces—museums, for example—was influenced by these events gradually and at a slower pace.
Sociopolis. One of the contemporary experiments in social housing design is the Sociopolis project, managed by the Spanish architect Vicente Guallart and presented with Guallart's master plan at the 2003 Valencia Art Biennial. This project, given the importance of environmental issues in the present era, experiments with a form of collective housing that enjoys high environmental standards while maximizing social interaction in this communal habitat. One of the noteworthy aspects of this project is the combination of city and village spaces and the adjacency of building blocks and farmland in the master plan, which is referred to as "rurban"—or village-city. Thirteen internationally renowned architects, among them Toyo Ito, MVRDV, and Greg Lynn, designed building blocks for this complex. The project's manifesto on the necessity of such projects states: "If we live in
the age of knowledge, and if to not be passive toward the world we must invest in research, should we not dedicate a portion of social housing production to the research and development of new building prototypes that respond to our present needs and help us envision the situations we will face in the future?"
Architecture of Living. As you will see in this issue, at present in many countries there exist different forms of challenges in residential architecture. For example, the tendency toward historicist architecture, which is one of the social and cultural challenges of our country at the moment, has its counterpart in other countries that especially have a royal history. In Britain and its former colonies, the general public gravitates toward Victorian-style houses that do not belong to the present time. In the documentary "The Ideal Home," the work of the British architect and filmmaker Alain de Botton (which is introduced in this issue), the dimensions and roots of this phenomenon—referred to as "pastiche" or historicism—are examined. The director of this film, in 2009, by launching an experimental project called "Living Architecture," created the conditions for building a number of special houses in Britain. The aim of this project is to build houses designed by internationally leading architects and to rent them to ordinary people. With the gathering of a group of prominent architects and architectural theorists of the world, such as Peter Zumthor, John Pawson, and MVRDV, houses with pioneering designs were built, and ordinary
people can experience living in them for a time. What is certain is that under normal circumstances, only a small percentage of society's classes have the chance to live in such houses. But here, many of those who gravitate toward traditional definitions of the house and classical styles become, after a period of residence in these houses, interested in this type of architecture and change their minds. Such projects play an important role in changing the general public's outlook toward good architecture. The general public cannot imagine what they have never seen or experienced, and the reason for their inclination toward previous definitions and familiar categories is the absence of courage and boldness in confronting unknown spaces, especially in the architecture of the house. Meanwhile, the architecture of public spaces is experienced on a daily basis, and for this very reason, the same society that quickly accepts contemporary architecture in public spaces retreats into the shell of tradition in their personal homes.
