Gallery-Restaurant White Cube

3rd Place (Tied), Renovation — 13th Memar Award

The primary concern in designing White Cube was addressing space and architecture rather than the secondary issue of decoration and arrangement. The designers asked how a restaurant's architectural space could help visitors achieve a distinctive spatial experience. The answer was designing a gallery: could the limited architectural space of a restaurant be organized in such a way as to also function as an art gallery?

The essential point in gallery design is freeing wall surfaces for displaying artworks. The result was a spatial diagram that organized restaurant and gallery side by side, with service spaces (kitchen) placed centrally at a distance from all surfaces and ceiling, in a semi-suspended manner.

The elongated volume of the project is divided into two equal parts on either side: one facing the entrance corridor and the other facing the central courtyard. Opening the space around the kitchen from three sides allows natural light from the courtyard-side hall to penetrate into the corridor-side hall, while also aiding air circulation and ease of movement for customers and staff.

The lighting of this White Cube was executed in three stages. First, providing adequate local lighting above each table. Second, lighting the central white cube. Third, illuminating the side walls to differentiate and better articulate the central white cube volume and separate walls from ceiling. By combining and adjusting light intensities, varied lighting scenarios can be created at different hours of day and night.
