The Lutheran church and parish centre of a new town outside Helsinki can best be described as the essence and distillation of Finland's particular natural conditions – a place of dense forests and highly variable sunlight. While the church is experienced as an entirely natural place, the space is uniquely a composition of linear elements carefully arranged within a rectilinear structure. The dramatic change of light through the seasons, from the midnight sun in summer to the midday darkness of winter, as well as the changing patterns of sunlight at every hour, turn the weekly experience of this place into a constant change, even if the rhythm of the church services remains the same.
