Recently, the island of Kish has been very much in focus for resort development ventures. However, architecturally it is becoming increasingly banal and haphazard. Reviewing the first generation of its resort buildings, we witness a fine and coherent architecture, both in terms of the simplicity of form and coherence of materials and details. An architecture that did not overwhelm the natural setting: for example, villas very close to the sea that appear simply as walled enclosures merged with or punctuated by plants and vegetation. Fine details are used in some places, such as in Hotel Shayan, where in the 1960s-70s fashion, fine thick perspex sheets and sections are used in the interior design as in a curved staircase and the ceilings of the lifts, or the use of large painting like surfaces in ceramic mosaics, each in a different design, on the roof sections of Bazaar-e-Faranseh (France), modernist and meant for luxury boutiques originally, but clearly referring to the scale of a traditional bazaar, and now derelict in the middle of a roundabout. And no fussy “landscaping” anywhere. Evidently, the fine simple local architecture of the island had considerable influ- ence on the period.
