THE PHILOSOPHY OF FAÇADE: A CONFERENCE IN USA, A DIALOGUE IN IRAN

www.philosophyartconference.org

In the next section, you will read a short report of the 2014 conference of Stony Brook University on the philosophy of the façade and the full text of a dialogue in Farsi between 15 young architects of the past two decades mostly successful designers who have won the Memar Award. Nearly all participants in the discussion reduce the representational role of the façade to a minimum and render it insignificant by assuming a functional and technical role for façade. Although the positions taken in the discussion are diverse, two main approaches can be detected which are not mutually exclusive: one is that, the building façade is part of the building and urban public space, and therefore architects should comply with the respective regulations; the other approach regards the façade as being subordinate to the designer’s strategy, and considers strategic functions superior to aesthetic ones.
