About the architect
Esmaeil Talaei, born in 1945 in Tehran, completed his architectural education in Italy and taught for a time at the Faculty of Architecture in Florence. He began his professional work in Iran in 1990 (1369 SH). Although in 1993 (1372 SH), through membership of the academic council of the Faculty of Art and Architecture of Azad University, he entered serious teaching activity — taking on the headship of the Architecture and Restoration Group, and then the Restoration of Historic Monuments and Cultural Objects Group, and adding to his effort there — he has, with notable energy, also been engaged in design and execution work. His first experience was three projects in joint practice with Shahryar Izadi (Chaplin Cinema-Theatre, the Presidential Pavilion, and the Vanak Cultural-and-Sports Complex; see Memar 9, Spring 1379), after which he set up his own independent office. The recent works of Esmaeil Talaei's office are mostly public ensembles — clubs, cinema-theatres and sports complexes — and a number of residential complexes alongside them. The renovation of the Iran-Bastan Museum is among his most recent works. The Zaferanieh Multi-Purpose Club, the Baharan Cinema-Theatre Complex, the Lavasan residential villas, the Zarafshan Cultural-Sports Complex, and the renovation of the Iran-Bastan Museum are presented in this issue.
